10 Most Beautiful Looking Linux Desktop.

Over the years I came across many many linux Desktop screenshots, it’s amazing how someone can spend huge amount of time tweaking and customizing their desktop look. Here are some of few linux desktop look I really liked, because of their creativity and uniqueness. They are not necessarily the most beautiful, but they are certainly very unconventional.
*Update: As mentioned by some, the first picture was a mockup; I wasn’t aware of that.

#1 is just a mock-up
Yes, I can verify that number one is only a mock-up. Someday it may happen, but it hasn’t yet.
What a great collection. Back in 2005 I saw the beautiful things people were doing with the KDE desktop. That told me everything I needed to know about Linux. That it put complete control of the operating system back in the users’ hands. Thanks for putting this together. It will no doubt convince a few more people that using a Microsoft product is not in their best interest.
Thanks for letting me know abou the mockup, I updated with an note mentioning it. However its still a beautiful mockup.

#8 is not linux, its freebsd 6 !!!
I think the more a desktop looks like the latest Apple OS the more average Joe likes it whether it is really good or not. BTW I use fluxbox too (the #8) and it doesn’t matter whether it runs on linux or freebsd. My theme is just darker and blueish ;).
Hello, what can I do to make my desktop look like picture #2?
Thanks :)
Stylische Linux Desktops…
Great Designs. What about a tutorial to make these designs at home?
Great Themes. Got Anyone a Tutorial to get these Themes runnin?
I plan to write some tutorials in the coming weeks, on similar themes.
Perhaps not all of them are reproducable. The first is a mock-up, which I wasnt aware of before posting it. Some of them are private projects, which the user doesn’t want to share with others, besides the screenshots. Atleast six of the above themes are doable without pulling your hair.
I will see what I can do.
Only 2 are good looking, all others are ugly. What about http://mutze.deviantart.com/gallery/ ?
#2 is not Linux, but Apple MacOSX.
bart number 2 is linux which looks like mac. Check out this website:
http://www.howtoforge.com/mac4lin_make_linux_look_like_a_mac
All very nice but how usable are they for getting work done quick?
The first one is a mock-up and the the second one is a complete rip-off of Mac OS X. That’s a pretty accurate indicator of the state of the Linux desktop. If you want your desktop to look like a Mac, why not just get a Mac? Why spend hours tweaking to make a bad copy?
Number 3 looks like a lyrae desktop. She makes some lovely themes for blackbox/gtk: http://customize.org/lyrae
@LOL: That’s 8 beautiful original Linux desktops. You *are* confusing Linux with Mac OS X in one regard though: In OS X, it would take hours hacking around with the OS to get it to look significantly different. In Linux, the whole “OS X-like” theme can be accomplished within a couple of minutes.

Very nice. I’m an xp user (mostly) but I did some redecorating of my own. The vista wallpaper is an inside joke, btw:

This was such an unnecessary waste of time.

#10 is by far the coolest and most original desktop I have seen in a long time. Does anyone know if this is an available downloadable theme?
Actually Chris Lee, an app called Shapeshifter from unsanity lets you download a multitude of themes which you can switch with one click on OS X; not to mention many others haxies for folders, labels and sound effects.
Nice addition.. But the desktop #1 actiaaly is not a desktop.. Its a mockup :)

#1 is my favorite by far…maybe by the time i have linux, it won’t just be just a mock-up. they’re all beautiful though!
@Yaboo:
What is the widget thing on the right hand side of your desktop?
@Darkstar not your fault, scripts automatically blocks any comments with multiple links as spam, which I can later approve. I just approved your message.
Everyone else thanks for sharing your desktop, there are all really nice, keep them coming.
Who is the owner of #10? I can’t find the picture on flickr itself.
Does anyone know what #6 is — what theme etc?

An apple logo in the #2 screenshot, and a terminal in many others… um, how typically dissapointing.
#10 is fantastic! Where’d you find that one??? Any links to the icons, fonts, theme, etc????
I would love to know the details on #7 or 10? Esp 10, it’s sweet!!
There is nothing special about picture 2.
It’s just awn with one of the many osx themes available.
nr. 1 looks great, to bad it’s a mockup.
Nr. 6, is that enlightenment?
Nr. 10 must be the most “unusualé one, I wouldn’t use it, but still.
Most of these are just themed or only minimally modified versions of their WM or DE. They don’t show “amazing time and effort” or anything. What takes time and effort is FVWM, Sawfish and other WMs (and DEs) that let you configure everything, but the basic stuff is ugly. These screen shots are just basic settings.

@gotta find, sorry I am still trying to look for it. I got it couple of years ago and had it saved in my comp.
This post makes me really want to ditch this Windows install and install Debian, or something… If only I had some way to back up a tonne of files I have need to keep though…
I’m sure I’ll make the switch soon.
shamess dual boot , pretty easy to do,,distros like ubuntu set it up in grub pretty easy. Or get a second hd

elpeurko, I would dual boot but I must have the smallest hard drive still made by manufacturers.
What I’ve done recently is make an image of my entire hard drive, so I can happily delete it all, knowing I have a back up to take me back to exactly the same position if I decide I don’t like it.
I should be running Ubuntu by this weekend! xD
Just a little update on my last comment; I actually went the whole hog and installed Ubuntu! Everything was working fine (and I had replacements which I were happy with for Windows applications), but the only problem was I couldn’t run World Of Warcraft! I tried using Wine which ran it awesomely, but was just unusably slow!
So, long story short, I had to come back to Windows. Maybe one day I’ll find the money to buy an external hard drive so I can keep Windows on that, so I can play WoW, and still keep Linux.

They’Re great all of them, thanks
The last one is the best one
#7 is quite interesting …is it based on Gnome and one of the *box WMs out there? How do I reproduce that circular “launcher” on the left-bottom corner?
…ok, if the details of the above themes were published it would be great!
Is #9 Compiz-fusion or Java-looking-glass? I’d rather say it’s the second… And isn’t the #6 just a plain Enlightenment (which I truly love) as it is #4?
Bye, M.
Shamess, I couldn’t get what the issue were about the small HD you’ve mentioned…
I’m trying to guess and if it is just a matter of not enough space on the disk (I wonder, I apologize if I’m going off-topics) why don’t you try getting a trimmed installation of Windows XP (follow the link for some instruction, if you please http://lifehacker.com/374376/trim-down-windows-to-the-bare-essentials ) for fast gaming and then just use all the remaining space on the HD for your Debian or XUbuntu…
You don’t need a to physically have a second hard disk, you just can partition the one you have ( http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/install-guide/s1-x86-dualboot-parted.html )
…Have fun! ;)
M.
I apologize for the typos =P
number 9 is just a plugin for compiz fusion at work, nothing special about that. any desktop running compiz fusion today would be able to do that. the theme in the background actually looks pretty bad.
Notably someone else has recently arranged a top list:
http://dailyapps.net/2008/08/15-most-beautiful-looking-linux-desktops-youll-ever-see/
Both share much and I’ve learnt from the other one that pictures were taken by Flickr (i wonder whether it is true for this one too and for all images)… now what about giving credit to the publishers of the original screenshots? If they really are from Facebook or similar maybe we could even message them and try to convince them to publish a short walk-through to obtain the same or similar looks ^_^
True power of Linux is when it runs as a server.
I don’t understand why the majority of these are in a list of “the most beautiful”? theres nothing special about them except for the wallpapers and a couple widgets.. perhaps this should be called “my favorite wallpapers being used in linux”?
